Tech/Life Balance – The Practice
Meditation is difficult. It takes discipline, determination, and a whole lot of gumption. Why even do it if it takes time and energy? As Bhante Gunaratna lets us know in his book, “Mindfulness in Plain English,” we are all striving for happiness and peace. Sometimes we get stuck on the treadmill of chasing after life’s desires. Because life is full of ups, downs, and in-betweens, we are never really satisfied with what is, we tend to place our moments into good, bad, and so-so. Wouldn’t it be better to be able to understand yourself and see the world in an uncritical way? Meditation creates awareness and understanding that nothing else can bring you. It is the best gift you can give yourself — a calm and concentrated mind. We cannot control everything, but we can control how we see ourselves and how we live in the world. It takes time, lots of time. It’s difficult, but not impossible. You choose to either try to control your environment or take time to control your mind so you are present and accept things the way they are. Try to practice every day and you will see for yourself what meditation really is.
